Choosing the right steelhead flies can be awfully frustrating.
Very recently, I chased steelhead all over western New York. It was some of the most exciting fishing I've been a part of. It's safe to say I finally see what the fuss is all about. However, when I was out there trying to figure out what to do, the variety of fly choices was somewhat intimidating. People told us about a number of different steelhead flies that were hot, and some that weren't so much. Thankfully, we got into a pattern that really worked for us at that time.
With that in mind, here's a good resource from Big Y Fly Company on how to pick out a few flies of your own to chase down some steelhead. I'd have to say this isn't all there is. However, it's a dang good place to start.
Yeah, that sort of knowledge doesn't come easy. It's earned by hours of repetition in the cold.
Had I studied this video before I left for New York, I probably would've put a few more fish in the net.
