The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is finally here, and we're on information overload from the exhaustive 4,000-plus word press release!
The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler goes on sale early next year, and before it does, Jeep has released plenty of information for fanatics to fawn over.
Here are the top 10 things to take away from the new Wrangler, courtesy of the press release that came out during the L.A. Auto Show.
1. Still an off-road icon
The basic design of the new Wrangler ensures that this SUV can go anywhere (including a water fording ability of 30 inches!) with an approach angle of 44 degrees, breakover angle of 27.8 degrees, departure angle of 37 degrees and 10.9 inches of ground clearance. This will be the first Wrangler to ever offer a two-speed transfer case, and it has four standard skid plates for underbody protection.
2. Model availability
The two door versions of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will be offered in Sport, Sport S and Rubicon trim levels, while the four-door Wrangler Unlimited will come in Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon. As has always been the case with the Wrangler (and CJ), expect many special-edition models to arrive in the future.
3. A trio of engines
The new Jeep Wrangler will offer three engines, which is the most engine options the Wrangler has ever offered. At launch, the Wrangler will offer a 270-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected inline-four and an updated version of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 putting out 285 horsepower, and in 2019, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 will be added with its 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque.
4. Sky One-Touch powertop
The Jeep Wrangler has always been known for its ease of open-air driving, and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler makes that even easier with the new Sky One-Touch powertop. Similar to the Sky Slider roof previously found on the Jeep Liberty, the Sky One-Touch is essentially a full-length sunroof with a power-operated cloth cover. It will be available sometime in the second quarter of 2018.
5. Sunrider soft top
If the Sky One-Touch roof sounds a little too complicated, the new Sunrider soft top is a premium option. This soft top makes it easier to remove the side window panels, but it can still be folded down completely.
6. Lightweight Materials
As with any modern vehicle, Jeep focused on making the new Wrangler lighter through the use of lightweight metal.
For example, aluminum was used for the doors, door hinges, hood, fender flares, windshield frame, engine mounts and steering gear. Further weight was shaved with hollow track bars and stabilizer bars.
7. Safety
In addition to fuel economy, Jeep also had to focus on safety with the new Wrangler. The all-new roll cage design creates a complete safety cell around the passenger compartment, but Jeepers will appreciate this aspect since it makes it easier to fold down the windshield.
Best of all, when the windshield is folded, the rearview mirror stays in place! In terms of tech, Jeep says that the 2018 Wrangler has more than 75 advanced safety and security features including Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic grid lines, electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation
8. Technology
For infotainment, Chrysler's fourth-gen Uconnect system comes in the Wrangler with five-, seven- and 8.4-inch touchscreen displays.
Being an open-air, off-road vehicle, unique elements were designed for the Wrangler including a push-button starter with weather-proof surround and an optional screen protector (like a smartphone) for the infotainment screen. All trim levels will be Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible.
9. Easy to accessorize
Knowing that Jeep owners love to customize their rigs, Jeep will offer more than 200 accessories right out of the gate. Not only will buyers be able to have quick access to these parts (instead of waiting for the aftermarket companies to catch up), but these Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts components won't affect the factory warranty.
10. Made in Toledo
Jeep has been producing vehicles in Toledo for more than 75 years, and the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is no different. The new Wrangler is produced at Toledo North - where the current Cherokee used to be made - and the Toledo South facility is reportedly being prepared to produce the Wrangler pickup.
