2018 Volkswagen Passat GT Shows that Family Sedans Can be Sporty Too

There were plenty of sporty cars displayed at the Detroit Auto Show, and Volkswagen wasn't going to miss out on the action.

Although not an all-out performance car, the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT might have what it takes of wearing a sport sedan label.

Introduced at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the new Passat GT pairs the sedan's most powerful engine with various suspension and styling enhancements.

This new model starts off with a sport suspension that provides a lowered stance, and it adds improved styling impact such as the R-Line front bumper, 19-inch two-tone wheels, red brake calipers and a black roof.

Smoked LED taillights, a black spoiler and dual exhaust round out the visual changes.

The Passat GT will only be sold in four colors: Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Grey, and Deep Black. The sport look was carried over inside the Passat GT with loads of piano black, aluminum and carbon fiber trim, while the black headliner and two-tone seats round off this car's cabin changes.

The most special part of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat GT is what's under the hood. VW's 3.6-liter VR6 (a narrow-angle V-6) is the standard engine for this car making 280 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Currently, this engine is only offered in the top-of-the-line Passat SEL Premium meaning that the Passat GT represents a value of $5,560 with a starting price of $29,090. It's not often buyers get to save money when opting for the sportier trim level.

Volkswagen says that the Passat GT is a "limited-run special model," but it has yet to say how limited production will be. This trim level brings some much-needed relevance to the current Passat, which debuted for the 2012 model year and was updated for 2016. It goes on sale this spring.
