2019 Ford Edge ST is a Performance CUV for the Masses

The horsepower-hungry gang that brought us the F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and Ford GT has created its first-ever SUV. And we really like it.

The 2019 Ford Edge ST is a sport-tuned version of Ford's mid-size SUV, and this version is a step up from the current performance model, the Edge Sport.

Debuting at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Edge ST is the latest Ford product to wear the ST badge.

Ford says that Edge ST will boast class-leading horsepower as it squeezed 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque from the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 - that's 20 more hp and 30 more lb-ft than the Edge Sport. To go with the added power, the ST also gets a "quick-shifting" eight-speed automatic transmission, ST-tuned suspension and an optional performance brake package. Bottom line, this is no badge and sticker package.

To look the part, the 2019 Ford Edge ST gets exclusive styling elements like the mesh grille, angular dual exhaust outlets and sportier side skirts. All-wheel drive comes standard, and buyers have the option to get dark-finished 21-inch wheels wrapped in sticky summer tires.

Before you scoff at the idea of this Edge, just keep in mind how popular the performance crossover/SUV market has gotten in recent years. No, the Edge ST won't rival the Lamborghini Urus or Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, but it should have the power, price and size to handle its own.

The 2019 Ford Edge ST (along with the rest of the updated 2019 Edge lineup) goes on sale this summer. Although pricing has not been announced, expect it to start higher than the current Edge Sport's $40,000 base price.
