If you aren't fly fishing for one of these reasons, it's time to change.
Frankly, you probably don't have a good excuse for not fly fishing. Unless you flat out don't want to, in which case, your loss. If you are still holding out or know someone who is, here's a list of excuses that are no longer valid.
1. It's too expensive.
No, you just don't know how to shop, or you still think of fly fishing as a sport only for elitists. I just bought my wife a starter fly rod, reel, and flies for $35. If you can't find a deal like that, check out this combo. Remember, you are just learning, so there's no need to break the bank. If you want to spend a little more money and get a little more in your starter kit, this 5- 6 weight starter package is a great alternative. Still on the fence? How much did you spend on tackle last year?
2. I don't fish for trout.
Well, I don't know what that has to do with fly fishing. Okay, that's a lie, I do know why. When most anglers think of fly fishing an image of an someone in waders, fishing a clear creek for trout. Or a scene from the movie "A River Runs Through It". While a fly is a great tactic on a trout stream; it works awesome for any species you target. One of my favorite tactics is to go after bream with a fly right after ice off and when bedding.
3. I don't have anyone to teach me, nor do I have a clue about how to cast.
I'll just leave this here...
4. I don't even know what fly rod weight to get.
This one is a legitimate problem that really depends on what you want to fish for. Personal preference on my part; I like the 6 weight. I use it mostly for bass and panfish so that does everything I need it to do. If you wish to target other fish, I have you covered, too.
Species | Fly Rod Weight |
Panfish | 4 - 5 (You're going to hook some bass so you'll want the extra muscle) |
Trout | 4 - 6 |
Bass | 5 - 8 |
Carp | 6 - 10 |
Steelhead and Salmon | 8 - 10 |
Pike and Muskie | 8 - 10 |
These are just ball park numbers. I have hooked almost everything with my 6 weight from bull bluegill to Michigan king salmon.
