As we approach the rut, we need to make sure we're prepared with the proper gear.
Deer hunters begin to salivate this time of year. Deer are the most active, colder weather starts rolling in and we can finally use guns. A lot of us haven't even gotten out there just yet because we don't hunt during archery season.
But don't worry, if you're one of those people, you still have time to get ready. Here are a few items to keep in mind.
1. A classic tent blind
While treestands are often preferred, setting one up can cause a decent amount of pressure on an area. On the other hand, you can just walk out and drop a blind on the ground and you're done. The blind pictured above is the Guide Gear Deluxe 4-panel Spring Steel Hunting Blind, which is a great way to go at an affordable price.
2. A reliable scope
There's an old saying that goes, "You're rifle is only as good as the scope you put on it." The saying's true.
Most of us have probably had at least one year when we procrastinated sighting in our scope and had nothing to use on opening day. Don't let that be you this year! There's still time, so go get the scope you want and get it sighted in before it's too late and you don't have time to get out to the range.
The scope above is a Leatherwood Hi-Lux 4-16x44mm Rifle Scope, which is currently on sale at SportsmansGuide.com.
3. Trail cameras
Obviously most people have been monitoring their trail cameras for the last several months. However, what does that mean for you, late-to-the-game hunter? It means clearance prices.
At this point in the year, you can get a trail camera at a really good price, and they can still be really helpful. Whenever you walk out to your spot in the woods, just place one of these bad boys somewhere and get it rolling. Likewise, just swap the SD cards every time you come in and out.

4. Ammunition
Just like anything else, everyone procrastinates. People decide they'll just buy their ammunition the day before opening day of gun season, thinking they won't have any problem finding .270 Win. shells. Then they quickly realize everyone else did the same thing and every store in town is sold out. Avoid that problem by getting your ammunition now. Sportsman's Guide currently has several boxes on sale, including the Hornady .270 Win. shells pictured above.
