Galveston has arguably the best saltwater fishing in Texas. The city's gulf beaches, jetties, piers, bay reefs, and flats provide anglers with easy access to a wide variety of game species, such as flounder, cobia, sharks, redfish and speckled trout to name a few.
The year-round angling is pretty great in this part of the Lone Star State, and if you're in the area (or swinging through Houston) it's worth it to take the time and cast a line. If you're planning a Gulf of Mexico fishing trip to Galveston, be sure to try one of the area's best fishing spots.
Rollover Pass
If a place is popular with the locals, odds are good that it's an excellent place to fish. Rollover Pass was built in 1956 to improve fishing opportunities in Galveston Bay. These days its a hot spot for several game fish species, especially flounder. In fact, Rollover Pass has been named the number one spot for fishing flounder in Texas.
Galveston Fishing Pier
The Galveston Fishing Pier is one of the most popular fishing spots in the city. Here, anglers fish for croaker, drum, blacktip shark, bluerunner, bull shark, cobia, crevalle jack, flounder, gaftop, king mackerel, pompano, red snapper, redfish, sea trout, and king fish. Don't forget, this pier charges $10 to fish.
East Bay
East Galveston Bay is packed with large spotted seatrout and redfish. The best places to fish are the bay's plentiful flats and reefs, including Hanna's Reef, West Bolivar Flats, Elmgrove Flats, Fat Rat Flats, Pepper Grove Reef, Robinson Flats, Cow Shed Reef, Smith Point and Northwest Flats. If you're kayak fishing, this might be a good spot for you.
Eagle Point Marina
On the west end of Galveston Bay is the Eagle Point Marina, located in San Leon. It is the oldest marina in Texas, and has access to the biggest fishing reefs in the bay. For 80 years, anglers have enjoyed fishing in this historic spot, and will likely continue for another 80 years.
61st Street Fishing Pier

The 61st St. Fishing Pier is a hugely popular fishing spot in Galveston. The pier charges anglers to fish, but it has a number of bait and tackle shops where all the necessary equipment is available for either rent or purchase. The 61st St. Fishing Pier is ordinarily open 24/7, though hours are subject to change depending on weather, especially in the winter.
Pelican Island

Pelican Island is known for its sandy flats and excellent fishing. From spring through autumn, it is a hub for anglers seeking redfish, trout, and flounder.
Remember, there are plenty of Galveston fishing charters available to take you out, which is especially helpful if it's your first time in the area.
