We've all been there, and this video captures it perfectly. This is how you look when you get caught outside your blind when you hear geese!
It absolutely, positively never fails. There's been a lull in the action, so you decide to get out of your blind to adjust the decoys, take a pee break, or whatever else. And, as if it's nature's way of pulling a prank on bird hunters, that's when someone hears geese coming.
This scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End accurately sums up what we all look like at that moment:
At last, you hear it. Whether it's a honk or a cackle, at long last, here they come (usually in droves). Sure, you're excited, but you're standing outside your blind. Sometimes you have your hands full with stuff. More often, you're just 20 yards away and have to make the sprint of your life. However - there is simply no "hopping" into that blind without disturbing pretty much everything you just set up.
We've all been there. You freeze, hold your breath and hope the rest of your compatriots will down the birds overhead. This recently happened to me. I was in the middle of a farmer's field on one knee attempting to watch three birds come in over seven hunters. (Bad news - they missed). I've lost count of the times I had to make the miracle jump back into a blind.
The moral of the story? If you're outside the blind - get ready to run (hopefully more gracefully than Captain Jack!).
