The Coast Guard has called off the search for survivors of a crab boat that went down on the Bering Sea over the weekend.
The 98-foot-long Destination had sent out an emergency radio transmission Saturday morning two miles off the Pribilof Island of St. George. The Coast Guard rushed to the area of the transmission, but rescuers found only some debris, including buoys and a life ring, and an oil slick at the site.
The six-man crew of the Seattle-based crab boat had ties to stars of Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel: Capt. Sig Hansen of the Northwestern and Capt. Keith Colburn of the Wizard from the show both say they considered several members of the Destination's crew to be "close friends."
The Coast Guard searched for survivors from Saturday through Monday night.
"A window of life is 18 or 20 hours—that window of life evaporated very quickly," Colburn says. "You've got a very good, safety-conscious crew on a really good boat, and something catastrophic happened."
The men missing have been identified as Charles Glenn Jones, Larry O'Grady, Raymond Vincler, Darrik Seibold, Kai Hamik and Jeff Hathaway.
