This fire lookout would be an awesome hunting getaway.
Looking for a one-of-a-kind place to get away from it all? This may be it. A decommissioned fire lookout tower is for sale in Benewah County Idaho. Not too far away from Washington and Montana, close to the St. John National Forest, and about seven and a half hours from Yellowstone National Park, the panhandle location was once home to the folks with the fire lookout jobs a lot of us have thought about.
Built in 1959 and relocated to its current location in 1985, the real estate listing for the tower shows what appears to be some pretty awesome views. No plumbing available of course, but there is a log outhouse and a wood stove. It's the sort of place where you'll have to pay attention to the weather reports and make sure you're supplied.
I guess if you're in the market for a fire lookout tower, you' re probably used to roughing it anyway, right? You won't be responsible for searching out forest fires, but you'll certainly have a view of them if they occur during the regular fire season!
The lookout sits on 13 acres and the listing says big game have been seen in the area. It even appears part of the Osbourne fire finder lookouts used to call in a blaze is still at least partially intact in the photos on the listing.
The only downside we see is the price. $67,000 seems pretty steep for an old tower with no utilities. One must be paying for the scenic views. It is technically situated on the Rocky Mountains, and good views of the United States backcountry are going to come with a price.
It may take a certain type of person to see this as their dream home, but if you've ever wanted to work on the firewatch crew for the Forest Service, this could be the next best thing.
Still, I know I want one. You can keep your big California and New York cities, and I'll find solace in the wilderness, letting my inner Jack Kerouac or Philip Connors shine through. Anyone want to give me a loan?
