What the heck is a throwline?
It's not often that sunfish make the news. However, when you are dealing with a state record sunfish, now that is something to go and tell the neighbors. As it just so happened, a new state record sunfish has been caught in Missouri, and it was caught using a very primitive technique.
James Lucas was fishing on a private pond in Lincoln county when the big slab hit. Officially classified as an "alternative methods" record, Lucas' fish weighed in on certified scales at one pound, one ounce. The previous record in this category only stood at six ounces.
What makes this record stand out is the actual alternative method used to catch the state record sunfish. Lucas was using a throwline. What this means is that he was just simply tossing a baited line into the water with no rod or reel. While utilizing this technique, the angler uses their arm to set the hook, then hand-lines the fish in.
"I choose to use a throwline because it is very challenging, and I enjoy a challenge!" said Lucas in an interview about his fish.
Congrats Mr. Lucas. That is one record to be proud of.
