Lake Fork Guy Asks: Is Fishing for Spawning Bass Wrong?

Should we fish for spawning bass?

That's the question Youtuber Lake Fork Guy is presenting to his viewers. Before you answer, watch him and his friend go out and do a little sight fishing on a Texas lake for some bass that are on beds.

Near the end, he gives his thoughts and raises some interesting points.

It's interesting he talks about Canadian lakes making spawning bass off-limits for fishing until after the spawn is through. Most likely you've heard of something similar.

It does seem like taking fish away from their beds for an extended period of time for tournaments would be harmful. Even assuming just the female is taken away from the bed for a while, that's still extra effort the male would have to exert to protect the nest from bluegill and other predators in the time she is gone. If both are taken, it's an open buffet for predators.

The flip side of the coin is that you could argue in hunting that deer and turkey are taken out of the biological picture completely during their breeding seasons. Surely catching a bass and immediately returning it to its bed isn't harmful right?

It's definitely a thought-provoking question. It would be interesting to see a scientific study that looked into the effects of fishing during the spawn.

What do you think? Should fishing for spawning bass be allowed or no?
