Call it an effort borne out of frustration, but when seemingly everything this angler tried failed he turned to a drone to sneak his lure into a bluegill bed.
Aaron Wiebe of Uncut Angling is trying his luck with spawning bluegills on Manitoba's Lake Metigoshe, which by his account is a lake that is "crawling with Master Angler Sunfish." He's got a couple of rods rigged and ready to go... and a drone. He's got a drone, too.
Wiebe admits that he's not real familiar with fishing for bluegills and his initial efforts prove rather frustrating. He spooks the fish and is just having all kinds of trouble connecting with the spawning 'gills.
Finally he decides to try a little experiment. He takes the drone he was using to film his outing, rigs it with a pink and white feather jig, and sets its course on a stealth mission to deliver the payload right on top of a bluegill bed.
Bingo! He not only effectively uses the drone to deliver the lure, but hooks the bluegill and airlifts it back to the boat!
I have to say, this is pretty cool. Especially if you're a technology geek. And the bluegills really are big ones. Massive even.
The drone has the advantage of catching the fish and filming it happen all at the same time. (And of course it delivers the fish right to you after it hooks it.) It's just too funny.
I'm not sure, but I don't think that this kind of drone fishing really qualifies as fishing. As cool as it is, there seems to be something missing. It's probably the connection the angler feels with the fish through the rod. But as a weird, unique and crazy fun experiment, well, it is a success.
