Extremely Rare Melanistic Deer Spotted in Utah

Rare black deer photographed near Moab, Utah.

Some deer garner more attention than others. In most cases, it's because of trophy antlers, but this story is about a melanistic deer that roamed in Moab, Utah.

The Utah Wildlife Resources shared a post and images of an extremely rare deer.

"Melanistic deer — which overproduce melanin, the pigment that turns their hair black — are much rarer than all-white or piebald deer.

Jennifer Horton spotted this one in Moab last year.#WildlifeWednesday"

North American Whitetail coined deer with melanism as "the rarest of the rare."

With the help of social media, these rare deer don't seem as rare. In fact, after a simple search many photos surface of deer with the same condition.
