This elk ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
By entering the disease management area, it unknowingly sealed its own fate. This trophy-sized elk euthanized in Pennsylvania is now being tested for chronic wasting disease.
As reported, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has announced a trophy sized bull elk that was euthanized. The 8- by 9-point bull ended up wandering into the DMA 3 zone, inciting fears that the bull might catch CWD in that area and bring it back to the elk herd in Pennsylvania's Elk Management Area. That could prove to be disastrous.
Chronic wasting disease has become a major problem all across the country. That disease, among others, is closely watched by state game commission officials to keep the spread minimal from affected areas. This elk is in the process of being tested for CWD. (In case you're curious, no Pennsylvania elk has ever tested positive for CWD before).
If you see game animals or any other wildlife acting oddly be sure to contact your local game commission.
