Fire struck areas get an emergency hunting season.
Sometimes desperate times call for drastic measures and that's just what has happened in parts of Nevada this year.
The Nevada Wildlife Commission has announced there will be emergency hunts for pronghorn antelope and mule deer in Elko County in areas that were hit hard by wildlife. There will be 700 tags available for mule deer does. An additional 700 tags will go to younger pronghorn antelope.
To be legal an antelope's horns must be shorter than their ears.
The main concern of the commission is that fires damaged key wintering areas to the point where they will be unable to sustain the usual herds during the long winter. The Reno Gazette Journal reports some 500 square miles of habitat was destroyed in the blazes.
Interested hunters can apply online through huntnevada.com. But don't procrastinate, the deadline is August 25. And the first antelope hunts begin September 25 and run through October 9.
For deer hunters, there are two deer hunts planned. The first will run October 10 through October 31 and the second will be from November 5 through November 20.
For Nevada hunters looking for an extra opportunity to fill their freezers this year, this seems like a good deal.
