Ohio Judge Defends Himself From Attacker with Concealed Handgun

An Ohio Judge was ambushed by an assailant; luckily, he defended himself.

Judge Joseph J. Bruzzese Jr. was ambushed outside the Jefferson County Courthouse in Steubenville, Ohio. The Judge was already injured in the encounter when Nathaniel Richmond started firing on him. According to ABC, Judge Bruzzese pulled out his own firearm and returned fire, as did a probation officer.

He is listed in stable condition. Nathan Richmond, the would-be assailant, was not so lucky, as he died after the exchange of gunfire. Richmond was the father of a Steubenville High School football player who was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl in 2012. Judge Bruzzese did not preside over the Richmond case, and it is not believed the verdict was the motive for the attack.

There is no known reason for this attack. Richmond laid in wait in his car and ambushed the judge. A passenger was in the vehicle with Richmond, who according to ABC, is not a suspect but is being questioned.

What is clear is that this attack would have gone very differently if Judge Bruzzese hadn't carried his own firearm for protection. The assistance from the probation officer cannot be overlooked as well. This attack was seemingly unprovoked and there was no prior connection between the two individuals. This story just shows that it always pays to prepare for the worst, which is unfortunately in most cases our fellow man.
