This black bear taken illegally at a dump is one of the largest ever harvested in Ontario.
One of the largest Ontario black bears ever harvested was shot on September 13, 2014 by a Longlac man. A trophy bear most definitely, except there was one hitch: the bear was shot and wounded within the Longlac Waste Disposal Site. According to a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry news release, the hunter returned several hours later to dispatch the injured bear.
Michael A. Gauthier was convicted August 29, 2017, for hunting black bear within 400 metres (1,312 feet) of a waste disposal site. Gauthier was fined $5,000 on that charge. He was also fined $1,000 for the illegal possession of wildlife and had his hunting privileges suspended for four years. The bear was forfeited to the Crown.
The bear's weight was taken after being dressed.
