DLake sturgeon is on Michigan's threatened species list. But partners around the state are doing something about it.
This summer and fall, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and its partners released almost 6,000 juvenile lake sturgeon into state waters.
"Many of these stocking efforts were public events that shined a spotlight on how important lake sturgeon are to Michigan," says DNR Fisheries Division Chief Jim Dexter. "Our state has a long history with the lake sturgeon, and working with our partners helps us protect them for future generations."
The lake sturgeon stocked in public waters across Michigan were collected in the wild. DNR collected the young fish in April and May and raised them at streamside facilities.
Officials then tagged and released the fish once they were large enough.
DNR says these efforts are essential to restore the species in Michigan. The many partners that help raise funds and provide resources are also essential.
Partners include the DNR, the Black Lake and Kalamazoo River chapters of Sturgeon for Tomorrow, the Little River Band and the Little Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa Indians, the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish band of Pottawatomi Indians, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Michigan State University, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
