What did the police use before AR-15s were around?
Well, the Remington Model 81 Special Police Rifle could have been a solid choice.

The Remington Model 81 Special Police Rifle offered a detachable magazine for quick reloading. The extended 15-round magazine paired with .35-caliber projectiles would indeed be a formidable police rifle.
With hunting rifle's action, this gun had some changes that didn't go over so well. Not many were manufactured either, making this neat little rifle a rare historical weapon.
