If you love elk shed hunting, you might have a problem.
Nevada is looking at the way deer and elk shed hunting is done in the state. And, it looks like the times when this activity takes place may change. As it's being considered, wildlife officials are looking at restricting this activity during the late winter months when the time for these animals to find food is critical. As it is now, hundreds, if not thousands of hobbyists and dealers scour the landscape looking for this brown gold.
"It's like the world's biggest Easter egg hunt," said Tyler Turnipseed, Nevada's chief game warden, in an interview. "It's kind of exploded in popularity in the last 10 years."
Utah has already imposed restrictions banning shed hunting until April, or at least until the snow melts. However, many people are feeling this is a little over the top.
"They can't take away your right to be out in the mountains," said Paul Fife, a Utah postal worker in a separate interview on this subject. "This is my pursuit of happiness, and they say I can do it only when it gets hot out and I have to avoid rattlesnakes."
It sounds like this is just the beginning of what could be a very controversial move. This might be a new trend as deer and elk shed hunting continues to grow in popularity.
