This camp is introducing children to hunting and fishing in a fun way, while also teaching them to respect wildlife.
Erin Crooks started Raise 'Em Outdoors with one goal in mind: getting kids outside. As a mother, and someone who grew up enjoying the outdoors, she recognizes the value in children experiencing the traditions her parents instilled in her.
"This is now something I strongly believe should be passed down to each generation to ensure we keep these things thriving," she said. "I also believe time spent outdoors as a youth not only develops healthier individuals, but teaches them problem-solving skills, patience and focus."
One of the biggest obstacles for many kids trying to get into hunting or fishing is the initial costs. By collecting new and used outdoor gear, REO is able outfit children who may not have the means to do so themselves.
REO, a nonprofit organization, hosted its first camp last year in Elkton, Oregon. Both kids and parents enjoyed a free, two-day retreat, learning about hunting, shooting, archery, fishing, fly fishing and hunting.
REO already has its next three camps scheduled, and has plans for two September camps in Virginia.
