Lt. Col. Oliver North, a 22-year Marine veteran, will become the new President of the National Rifle Association of America after the Board of Directors initiated the move April 7.
North will assume the role of outgoing President Pete Brownell, who elected not to seek a second term, opting to put his energy and full attention toward his family business.
"I am honored to have been selected by the NRA Board to soon serve as this great organization's President," North said in a press release posted to the NRA Blog. "I appreciate the board initiating a process that affords me a few weeks to set my affairs in order, and I am eager to hit the ground running as the new NRA President."
Effective immediately, North will retire from his current position at Fox News.
NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch took to Twitter Monday afternoon to congratulate North:

North's appointment does come with controversy. In the late 1980s, he played a role in arranging the secret sale of weapons to Iran and diverting the proceeds of those sales to the Nicaraguan rebels.
In 1989, North was convicted of obstructing Congress, destroying government documents and accepting an illegal gratuity.
All convictions were overturned in 1991.
