Quick thinking helped save this fawn's life.
Now that spring is finally here, fawns are starting to drop everywhere. But on Sunday morning, a doe was hit and killed by a car in New Jersey before she could deliver, prompting a police officer to take extreme emergency action.
What happened next was unbelievable. The Washington Township Police Department posted the story and photos on their Facebook page. An officer referred to only as Officer Vernon responded to a deer-vehicle collision.
Even though the doe was dead, he discovered a fawn still moving around inside its mother. So the officer performed an emergency roadside cesarean section. Inside were two fawns.
One was already dead, but the other was still alive!
Animal control officer Robert Lagonera was then called out to the scene to assist.
"I arrived and took it home to dry it off and get it warm while rubbing its chest to help the underdeveloped lungs work," Lagonera said in the post.
He's now working to get the fawn the proper care it needs to survive.
As crazy as this story is, it isn't the first time someone has done an emergency C-section to save a fawn from its road-killed mother. The exact same scenario played out in British Columbia two years ago.
