What do you think you'd find in a turkey's crop?
You don't often hear the turkey mating season called the rut, but it's similar in a lot of ways. Toms are looking for love all the time, so their stomachs take a back seat. But once the mating season dies down, it's back to the food to re-energize.
After his client's turkey harvest, Fred Eichler is field dressing this tom and decides to check the crop to see what the birds might be on. The finding's really interesting, too, as it was loaded with alfalfa, clover, grass, and even one unlucky grasshopper.
The findings are so fresh and clean that it almost looks like a fresh-tossed salad.
This just goes to show how important it can be to find food sources when it comes to late-season turkey hunting, similar to whitetail hunting. Turkeys are creatures of habit, and it's obvious this turkey was using the same spot for feeding everyday.
Next time you harvest a turkey, take a look and see what they've been munching on. This can be very useful scouting information!
