17-Pound Wipers Electroshocked in Nevada

Fisheries biologists electroshocked Lahontan Reservoir in Nevada and ended up with their arms full of huge wipers!

For those not familiar with the term, the term "wiper" refers to the hybrid species between a female white bass and a male striped bass. These fish can bend some rods, too.

"When comparing adult fish, the hybrid has a deep body and an arched back similar to the white bass," the Nevada Department of Wildlife says that. "Wipers can often be distinguished by broken or irregular stripes on the front half of body and straight lines on the rear half of body."

When NDOW biologists went in search of white bass on the reservoir, they came across a lot of carp. But, they were hoping for more when this happened:

"That's not a carp, that's not a carp!" Travis Hawks, NDOW fisheries biologist exclaimed.

The team had shocked up two mammoth fish, as one was 17.8 pounds and the other was 17.4 pounds.

Both fish were safely returned to the water, too, so if you're in Nevada, throw the rod and reel in the car!
