The brave Colorado runner who killed a mountain lion talks about his encounter.
Thirty-one-year-old Colorado runner, Travis Kauffman, fought off and killed a mountain lion that attacked him during his trail run almost two weeks ago.
He explains his encounter in the video below.
Kauffman decided to take a run around noon in Larimer County. He started a 12-mile run in the mountains west of Fort Collins towards the Horsetooth Mountain rock peak. Shortly into his run he heard pine needles rustling and noise coming from behind him. He turn around to see a mountain lion coming after him.
"I was pretty bummed out to see a mountain lion chasing after me," Kauffman explained.
He threw his hands up in the air to try to scare the feline off, however, the cat continued towards him and lunged at him.
Kauffman threw his hands up to protect his face, and that's when the lion grabbed his wrist and locked on.
He managed to grab a nearby rock and hit the cat, but to no avail.
"My fear response turned into a fight response," he told the Denver Post.
With a little humor in his explanation, Kauffman explains how he pinned the cat's legs with his knee and stepped on the cats throat with his other foot. The cat struggled for about three minutes. Kauffman then ran thinking that the mother lion might be around.
Kauffman required 20 stitches to his face, and also had numerous puncture wounds to his neck and legs.
