Want to join in on the fun? The Michigan Free Fishing Weekend happens Saturday and Sunday.
Anyone in the state of Michigan can fish for free Saturday, Feb. 16 and Sunday, Feb. 17, for the 2019 Winter Free Fishing Weekend.
You don't need a fishing license those two days, but of course all other fishing regulations still apply. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hopes the weekend develops into a pathway to appreciation for Michigan's fishing and waterways.
In addition, Michigan state parks will waive the Recreation Passport entry fee during the Free Fishing Weekend. There's also a Free Fishing Weekend in the summer, being held June 8 and 9 in 2019, in case a cold winter fishing session isn't your idea of fun.
Encouraged through the hashtag #MiFreeFishingWeekend, the two days in Feb. and two days in June reflect an ongoing effort to promote the bountiful world-class opportunities associated with Michigan fishing.
For the uninitiated or social anglers, there are several organized outdoor activities during Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend scheduled throughout the state to participate in.
OAC Outdoors - Michigan Free Fishing Weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. both days). Ice-fishing equipment and safety practices are the focus at the Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit. Equipment will be provided.
Free Ice-Fishing Day for Kids at Camp Pet-o-se-ga in Alanson
(Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.). Fishing gear, hot chocolate and hot dogs will be on hand for any kids who want to join.
10th Annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Fishing Contest
(Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The annual competition benefits the Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department and is well worth it.
