Remington came out with an offering in .50 BMG known as the R2Mi Bolt-Action.
It is not often that we hear about a brand-new .50 BMG platform coming onto the market. It is something of a specialty market for these firearms after all.
That's exactly what Remington did in May 2020 when they announced the new R2Mi bolt-action rifle chambered for .50 BMG ammo in May of 2020. This is one of the more interesting bolt-action rifles we have seen recently. Remington decided to put the bolt on the left side of the gun. The idea here is that the shooter will not have to lift their head, leading to faster cycling on to the next round. Initially, there was no word on whether a variant with the ejection port and bolt flipped for left-hand shooters is in the plans.
The R2mi features a 30-inch free-floating barrel with a 1:15 rate of twist inside a fully ventilated handguard. The barrel is fitted with an AAC Cyclops muzzle brake and is made to accept a suppressor right out of the box. While .50 BMG has never been known as a high precision round, Remington says this new rifle is capable of sub MOA accuracy. It will be interesting to see what the first shooting tests with this firearm produce.
Details of the Remington R2Mi Rifle
If you think this new rifle bears a resemblance to the Barrett .50 BMG, you probably are not alone. It is comparable in overall length at 57 inches and features a steel bipod and ERGO Grip Deluxe Tactical pistol grip much like the M82. Remington has not given specifics on weight, but we imagine it must be close to the 28-pound weight of the Barrett M07. That's because much like that rifle, the receiver is machined from aluminum which should help cut the pounds down a little and make the weapon easier to handle.
The aluminum parts are covered with that eye-catching green hard anodized finish. The barrel, bolt, and other steel parts have a manganese phosphate finish. To accommodate a wide range of optics, the R2Mi features a MIL-STD 1913 picatinny rail that will allow you to mount your choice of glass for long-range shooting.
This Remington uses 10-round magazines, and the company is including two of the box magazines standard. Remington says the gun is made to quickly disassemble AR-style for easier maintenance and cleaning of such a large firearm.
The Remington R2Mi .50 BMG rifle comes with a fully adjustable MagPul PRS buttstock, and the upper receiver and lower receiver are manufactured out of 6061-T6 lightweight aluminum alloy.
As a nice bonus, Remington is shipping these guns with ear protection, eye protection, and a cable lock included. They are even including a custom Pelican Storm case to carry this awesome new firearm in.
At this point you are probably wondering about the price. Well, it is a .50 BMG caliber rifle, so you should already know that it is not going to be cheap. Remington says the MSRP is $4,559. We cannot say for certain, but we expect the street price will probably be much less than that. Considering that a brand-new Barrett costs anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000, it is a more affordable option for anyone looking for their own .50 BMG platform. This big green gun would look alright in your gun safe, wouldn't it?
