Former NASA engineer builds the world's most ridiculous bird feeder.
Anyone who has ever placed a bird feeder in their yard has likely dealt with squirrels raiding it at some point or another. Those little rodents are relentless in their search for food and we have seen them bypass all sorts of squirrel deterrents to raid the seed that was never meant for them.
That is what former NASA engineer and now YouTuber Mark Rober was facing in his backyard. The stubborn squirrels easily bypassed three "squirrel proof" traps that he purchased online.
That got the gears churning in his head and he figured there had to be a better way. Using his engineering background to the fullest potential, he decides if the squirrels are going to raid his feeder, he is going to make them work for it. He basically builds an "American Ninja Warrior" obstacle course downsized for squirrels. We are not kidding. You simply must see this thing in action and how the squirrels responded to his challenge.
The lesson here seems to be that there is no such thing as a squirrel-proof bird feeder. These clever rodents found workarounds and even sometimes outright cheats to all the obstacles placed in their way.
The funniest thing about this video is that a bunch of squirrels managed to outsmart a NASA engineer! Maybe we have not given the intelligence of squirrels enough credit. It is worth noting that in the comments section Mark says he will re-try this experiment next year with an updated and more difficult course now that he knows these animal's capabilities.
This was a totally over-the-top and ridiculous experiment and we loved every second of it. It is nice to have something lighthearted and funny to laugh at in these difficult times right now. We also learned a lot about how squirrels are much more athletic than we first realized. It will be interesting to see round two of this experiment and if he increases the gaps for some of those jumps the second time around.
