A homemade pipe bomb was set to explode at a Boone County hunting area, but luckily it was dismantled by authorities.
A homemade pipe bomb that was attached to lid of a trash can or some other type of container in a public hunting area was discovered and reported to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.
According to their Facebook page, "Deputy Pontius and Deputy Godzicki responded to a hunting area south of Hwy 30 in the 800 block for a report of an undetonated home-made pipe bomb device."
The sheriff's office said that the device was left at the location and had been set to explode in a delayed manner, which could have detonated without any supervision. Certainly if anyone had entered the area when the device detonated, their lives would have been in serious danger.
The State Fire Marshal's Office sent two agents to the area to investigate. Authorities say the device was examined and dismantled, with the evidence sent to the Division of Criminal Investigations for further analysis.
The Des Moines Register also quoted Chief Deputy Brian Pontius as saying, "We have no way to guarantee that" this will be the only bomb, which is "why we're asking people to stay alert, and if they see something, report it and don't touch it."
Pontius also said that it was an Iowa Department of Natural Resources employee, who was checking on a project in the area, that found the bomb shortly before 11:00 am in the Harrier Marsh Wildlife Management area just off of U.S. Highway 30, southeast of the township of Ogden.
As it is an ongoing investigation at this time, officials are asking anyone with information to contact the Boone County Sheriff's Office at (515) 433-0524.
