Electric vehicles are becoming popular as gas prices continue to soar and individual states enact climate change policies. But what does that mean for the future of camping trailers? People living the RV life have large diesel- or gas-powered trucks capable of towing 10,000 pounds or more. However, electric vehicles don't have the same tow capacity as their gas-filled counterparts. That's a hole Los Angeles camping trailer manufacturer Polydrops is looking to fill.
The company set to work creating lighter, more-aerodynamic trailers to tow behind an EV. Polydrops' effort yielded a 640-pound drop-style trailer dubbed the P19 Shorty, which the company says fits two people and a dog in the basic cabin. Not only did Polydrops eliminate some of the size and weight of its original designs, but the P19 Shorty also has a lower price of $9,950.
The P19 is the shortest in Polydrops' line at only 11.7 feet long. The interior includes overhead cubbies, a thin convertible table/desk, a trifold mattress, an LED light, and a 110-volt outlet. The outlet allows users to plug into the insulated trailer, but only when the trailer is connected to an external 110-volt source. The bed area measures 54 by 80 inches, a decent amount of space for two people.
Polydrops contends that P19's design is the most aerodynamic option of the 100 different alterations it ran on designs. The sidewalls are flat, and the roof has more of an arch. To further reduce drag, the front air tunnel redirects air from the car, along with a front splitter, rear wing, and fender vents.
The trailer is made of aluminum, keeping it light, and the Timbren Axle-Less suspension is rated for 2,000 pounds, leaving owners 1,360 pounds to pack up the inside. The simple design does not include water or propane tanks, nor does it have a refrigerator. While it doesn't have wing doors like other models, the P19 Shorty has two locking doors, one on either side, and four windows with insect screens.
