Should You Add Coconut Oil to Your Pet's Diet?

While health gurus rave about the benefits of coconut oil in human diets and skin care, it has the same effect in dogs and cats. The reason it is good for humans and pets alike is due to its fatty acid content, specifically Medium chain triglycerides (MCT), which is the good kind of saturated fat. MCT is made up of Lauric Acid, Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic which all have their own health benefits. 

Drizzling coconut oil on your pet's food can aid in moving along the digestive tract. Beware, though, as too much can be a laxative! A good gauge is 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, but gradually introduced to the diet so that your pet's body has time to adjust. Side effects of too much coconut oil are diarrhea and gassiness, so make sure you start with a small amount. If your pet sees an allergic reaction, consult your vet.

Coconut oil is an immune-booster superfood with anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. It can help regulate diabetes and the thyroid function by way of balancing hormones.

Lubricating properties can aid orally in arthritis and topically for itchy skin and dry skin, various skin conditions like hot spots, and coat care. Your dog's coat and your dog's skin will see positive effects of coconut oil, similar to fish oil. Coconut oil can also help heal wounds and prevent disease. A daily dose has also been known to put allergies at bay. Its effects on the metabolism and immune system also increase energy and cognitive function. Coconut oil can cure so many ailments- It isn't called a superfood for nothing!
