Dogs are man's best friend, and that's true no matter their size or breed. There is a wide variety of personality traits. Some pups can be independent and stubborn, while other pups can be very loving. However, one of their more admirable qualities is just how fiercely loyal they are. They love us unconditionally, and we love them back (even when they chew on our shoes.) While all dogs love their owners, some care a little bit more than the rest. Loyal dogs have strong feelings of allegiance toward their owners. The most loyal dog breeds are hopelessly devoted. Some even pick one person in their family to protect, follow, and play with. Their chosen human isn't always the person who feeds them and walks them either. Dogs will form an attachment to the person they feel the strongest bond with, and sometimes that's the kids in the house.
While all doggos are the best pups, sometimes we want our pups to care as much about us as we do about them. If loyalty is at the top of your pup list, you may want to consider one of these faithful hounds. Of course, there are many pups who fit the bill, here are 12 to get you started.
1. Labrador Retriever
Whilst Labradors have a lot of love to give, they are also loyal to their families. Your Lab might want to say hello to everyone and everything in the park, but he will always want to come back home with you at the end of the day.
2. Akita
The Akita is known for his loyalty and devotion. When well-socialized from a young age, this breed can be very loving and friendly with its family members. That said, he may never be extremely friendly with strangers, and aggression is reportedly not uncommon with other dogs.
3. Boxer
Boxers are intelligent, high-energy, playful dogs that like to stay busy. Their temperament reflects their breeding. They prefer to be in the company of their owners and are loyal pets that will fiercely guard their family and home against strangers.
4. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers make the perfect family companions. They are very obedient, playful, loyal, intelligent, well-mannered, and great with kids and even with strangers (as long as they don't sense danger). Furthermore, they're also great watchdogs, but you can't expect much from them if you want a guard dog.
5. Beagle
Beagles are the quintessential happy doggo. No one can resist their adorable puppy eyes. They love to play with their humans and other dogs, making them the perfect addition to any household.
6. St. Bernard
These dogs are exceptionally loyal to their masters and will even defend them if they are being threatened. St. Bernard's loyalty to his family and his master will supersede his natural wiring as a docile animal. This is very unusual for such a temperament, and it is one of the most remarkable characteristics of the St. Bernard.
7. German Shepherd
German Shepherds are not born any more loyal than any other breed. Their temperament simply makes them the type of breed that is likely to become very loyal with proper guidance. This type of relationship will create a dog who is very emotionally stable, loyal, and happy.
8. Rottweiler
Rottweilers have a reputation for being intimidating and aggressive because they are natural guard dogs and can be protective of their home and family. However, they thrive on attention and being with their people, and the more time they spend with their family, the happier they'll be.
9. Collie
Collies are known for their unwavering devotion to their owners, They are affectionate, loving, and loyal creatures, sometimes to a fault. They are also bred to be working dogs and to look to their owners for directions.
10. Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees is fiercely loyal to their flock, both human and animal. He feels responsible for you and your family, and your property. He is your friend and not your slave. This characteristic makes for a dog that is very protective of his territory and everything that is in it.
11. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas are often known for their loud barks and tiny bodies, but they are incredibly loyal animals. Even though they are small, they believe it is their job to protect their humans. They will stick by their person's side at all times.
12. Border Collie
Border collies are another herding group pup. They are loyal to their families, which makes them eager to please. Since they want to make their owners happy, they will learn commands quickly. Border collies love to run and play, so they need space and a lot of exercise.
We did leave off the famous doxie, but based on my experience, I wouldn't categorize ours as 'loyal' all the time!
Other loyal dog breeds you may want to be added to the list based on the research include Terriers, Brittany, Lassie, Shelties, Doberman Pinscher, Newfoundland, Mastiffs, Yorkies, and Dachshunds.
Since they are so loyal, many of these breeds are therapy dogs, search and rescue, and military dogs!
