You may remember that, back in early 2018, Ford started the model year strong in the pickup truck segment with the F-450 Super Duty. This powerhouse's 4x2 Crew Cab model offers up to 34,000 pounds of gooseneck towing, which equates to 17 tons.
The engine behind this best-in-class number is the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel. With an increase of 10 horsepower and torque from the 2017 engine, this machine cranks out a hefty 450 horsepower and 935 lb-ft of torque.
Redesigned cylinder heads provide more strength for heavier loads, while fuel and turbo boost calibrations help maximize horsepower and torque.
Paired to this machine is Ford's renowned TorqShift SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission. Progressive range select is included, as well as full manual and tow/haul mode.
A fully boxed, high-strength steel frame supports the Ford F-450, as do stronger-than-usual axles. Not only that, but the four-wheel anti-lock brakes have also been redesigned and are now the largest in the class.
However, not anyone can take this pickup truck for a joyride. It ain't your typical F-150.

"The 2018 Super Duty has brought a bazooka to a knife fight," said Dave Sullivan, a product analysis manager at AutoPacific. "To take full advantage of the F-450's capability, you'll need a commercial driver's license. This update comes with major bragging rights. You can haul the family and a house behind your truck. No other crew cab model can come close to hauling 17 tons."
The engineers at Ford understand that while this much towing muscle is incredibly impressive, it can also be incredibly difficult to control. But work trucks have never been so technologically advanced.
To assist, the Ford F-450 is outfitted with a number of performance systems. The trailer tow reverse guidance is a class-exclusive feature that includes cameras in the sideview mirrors and a visual guide on the center touchscreen.
Other notable features include:
- The class-exclusive live-drive power takeoff (PTO) provision with mobile mode
- Diesel engine exhaust braking with three modes
- Six upfitter switches in overhead console
There's really no denying it: the 2018 F-450 Super Duty pickup is engineered to tow some serious power.
