Another Volkswagen I.D. concept is headed our way—but first, it'll make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
We'll finally get to see what VW has been up to lately with their latest addition to the I.D. lineup: the I.D. Vizzion.
The I.D. Vizzion joins the I.D. Crozz, I.D. Buzz and I.D, and it is also the brand's first fully autonomous car in the lineup.
According to Volkswagen, "Volkswagen is currently advancing the development of modern vehicles in all areas. The goal: to apply innovative technology to making the automobile cleaner, safer and much more convenient and comfortable. With these new qualities, the car will be able to further extend its significance and value for future mobility."
A 111kWh battery pack will be implemented, which lets the vehicle travel 413 miles on just one charge. With the dual electric motors, a total power output of 302 horsepower is to be expected.
No steering wheel, pedals or visible controls will be built in this concept, providing the would-be driver the same role as passengers—to enjoy the ride.
With this in mind, the I.D. Vizzion strips the passengers of any control over the vehicle. This contrasts with the other I.D. models, which provide the passengers vehicle control if needed.
Instead, only a "digital chauffer" will have the ability to navigate the car with the aid of assistance systems.
A "virtual host" will be present to communicate with the passengers via voice or gesture. It's engineered to know each rider and his or her preferences, and adjust the ride accordingly.
2020 marks the year in which the I.D. will officially be launched to the public as a full electric car. The additional I.D. models will follow suit in intervals.
This latest concept is "showing the direction Volkswagen is taking in the technology and design of its future electric models."
It seems we better get used to this, as VW is hard set on rolling out a total of 20 electric cars by 2025.
Electric cars we can get behind. But fully autonomous cars—especially like the I.D. Vizzion—could we support? Are we, or will we ever be, comfortable enough to forego complete control of an automobile?
This concept model raises a lot of questions about the future of the auto industry, and if this level of technology and innovation will ever make it to roadways.
