What’s the True Cost of Owning a Used Tesla Model S?

Have you ever wondered what it costs to own an older Tesla model over time?

Ben Sullins, a data scientist who covers EV stock market prices, Model 3 CarMax values, and other auto-related number crunching subjects on his YouTube channel, Teslanomics, provides a 2-year cost breakdown of his Tesla 2013 Model S.

The 2013 Model S, one of Tesla's earliest models, offers the second-smallest battery in its history (60kWh), with a faster depreciation value than current models, according to Ben.

In short, Tesla offered Ben a trade-in value of $36,300, or $18,000 less than its original price. When depreciation, insurance, maintenance, repairs, and charging are accounted for, his total cost was $23,659 over two years - on top of $1,100, or a little under $50 a month, in electricity costs to drive 18,000 miles.
