After a 10-year absence, Chevrolet is getting back into the medium-duty truck market with an expanded lineup of Silverado HD offerings.
In addition to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks that were introduced earlier this year, Chevrolet also revealed a new lineup of work-ready medium duty trucks. The new Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD are the successors to the Chevrolet Kodiak that was killed off in 2009.
Under the front-hinged clamshell hood is a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 with 350 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque. This engine is backed by an Allison transmission, and the trucks will be available with two- and four-wheel drive.
The trucks will offer Regular and Crew Cab configurations, and they will incorporate other truck-friendly features like front wheels that can steer 50 degrees, an easily accessible DEF tank on the passenger side and an optional factory-installed air suspension, which Chevrolet says is a class-exclusive feature.
The option list of these medium-duty Silverados reads like the conventional versions of the trucks with technology such as OnStar, built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless smartphone charging, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado medium-duty trucks go on sale later this year, and they will be built at the Navistar Springfield Assembly Plant in Springfield, Ohio. Unlike the previous Kodiak, there will be no GMC version.
