Following Scion's death in 2016, two models survived as carryover zombies in the Toyota lineup. Say goodbye to them both.
After 14 years, Toyota shuttered its youth-oriented Scion brand for the 2017 model year. The newest models in the lineup - the Scion iM hatchback and the Mazda-derived Scion iA sedan - were kept alive thanks to a simple badge swap job.
The introduction of the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan shovels the final scoop of dirt onto the Scion grave.
Both cars were introduced at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, and they ditch the monospec mindset of Scion. This means that each will be offered with varying trim levels, allowing customers a wider variety of content.
Toyota Corolla Hatchback
The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback will replace the Scion iM/Toyota Corolla iM when it goes on sale this summer. Like the iM, the Corolla Hatchback is based on the Toyota Auris sold overseas, and the latest generation is completely new from the ground up riding on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. This new hatchback is lower, longer and wider than the Corolla iM, and it might be the coolest-looking car to ever wear the Corolla name.
The front end design is a more stylish interpretation of the aggressively styled Toyota Prius Prime, and the interior is equally modern and stylish with all the latest technology. Hinting at the nature of the Corolla Hatchback, Toyota will only offer this car in its sporty SE and XSE trim levels.
Toyota Yaris Sedan
Based off the fun and sporty fourth-gen Mazda2 sedan, the 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan carries over from last year with a new name (no longer the Yaris iA) and a minor facelift. When the Yaris Sedan goes on sale this fall, it will offer three different trim levels (L, LE and XLE).
