Ford celebrated the 54th anniversary of the Mustang by confirming three awesome race cars ready to continue this car's racing heritage.
Regardless if you're a fan of circle tracks, road courses or drag racing, the Ford Mustang will soon have you covered. Ford announced a trio of Mustang race cars ranging from American and Australian stock car racers to the return of the quarter-mile-dominating Mustang Cobra Jet.
2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet
The 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet comes 50 years after the original Cobra Jet, and Ford says that this is the most powerful and quickest Cobra Jet ever offered. These cars are powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V-8, and they get racing upgrades such as four-link rear suspension, nine-inch solid rear axle, NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech seats, coil-over suspension and Weld Racing wheels.
Of course, the Mustang Cobra Jet is not street legal and doesn't even have a VIN. Instead, it's offered as a part number through the Ford Performance Parts catalog. Only 68 Cobra Jets will be built, and they will come painted in either Race Red or Oxford White.
NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series
NASCAR fans have already seen a lot of the Mustang in the Xfinity Series since 2011, and the 2019 season will see the Mustang replace the Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series. The Fusion has been in NASCAR since 2006. Ford hasn't finalized the design of its Mustang Cup car, but it will make its official debut at the 2019 Daytona 500.
Australian V8 Supercars
Finally, Ford confirmed that the Mustang - the "world's best-selling sports coupe" - will also compete Down Under in the Australian V8 Supercars series. The Mustang replaces the Falcon, which ended production in 2016, and was aided by a new rule allowing coupes for the first time since the series started in 1997.
