Many people are looking to beat the heat this summer. Whether you're going to going to the beach or putting a pool in your backyard, it's important to remain safe and do things properly. One Ohio family got more than they bargained for when they were getting their pool ready for the summer.
Five of the family members ended up at the hospital due to a chemical reaction in their pool. These people were injured in a swimming pool incident on Thursday. According to the Eastlake Fire Department, a homeowner in Cleveland was preparing chlorine in his home for the pool. However, a chemical reaction occurred.
As a result, three adults and two children ended up taking a trip to the hospital. Fortunately, they are in stable condition, all things considered. Authorities are investigating the incident and exactly what caused the chemical reaction, but from the sounds of things, it sounds like a terrible accident.
Pool Accident Injures Several
The Ohio family wouldn't be the first to accidentally injure themselves. Every year, thousands of Americans experience pool-related accidents thanks to the chemicals used. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2015 to 2017, there were 13,508 emergency department visits thanks to pool chemicals. According to the organization, these mostly occurred at home during the summer.
While chlorine is useful for keeping pools clean, it can also seriously injure you if you're not careful. Just take a look at some of these stories for instance. In 2023, 12 people in Texas ended up in the hospital after someone put too much chlorine in a lazy river. Ultimately, authorities had to deploy hazmat crews to the scene. No it's not the sign of an apocalypse, just some people cleaning out the pool. That shows how serious some of this can be. When it comes to chemicals, you really don't want to mess around.
In another unfortunate case, around three dozen people got sent to the hospital in 2018. It was due to chlorine turning to gas form at a California swim club. The chlorine gas cloud formed during a swim class resulting in several injuries.
