As you may have seen, the Wide Open Spaces Facebook page began posting wildly inappropriate images and messages on Friday, February 13, 2015. The posts were coming from an anonymous party, which was in no way affiliated or approved by Wide Open Spaces.
In other words, we were hacked.
It may have been a targeted job by cyber criminals, or it may have been some horribly bad Friday the 13th luck, but in either case, all Wide Open Spaces employees were immediately locked out of their administrator status, and nothing could be done.
We've been working tirelessly to regain control of the page, including notification of Facebook through multiple channels, up until this very moment. Be assured that our security practices were beyond the standard, that this was a sophisticated attack and that there was nothing more that we could do to get it to stop.
We respect each and every one of our readers, our social media followers and our fans, and we would never deliberately allow something like this to happen. In fact, the same thing happened to Crayola and Delta Airlines a short while ago, along with 100s of others. You can read about that here.
We understand the feelings that went through the heads of the folks who saw what was being posted, because we had the same ones.
If there's one thing to take out of it, it's that you are a passionate group of sportsmen who care a lot about what you see and read online regarding your hobbies, and we'll do everything in our power to continue providing you the best and most engaging content with no incidents in the future.
