Amazon has launched a new Alexa software development kit on Github for developers to work on Alexa-enabled features.
The release, called Auto SDK, allows automakers and third-party hardware manufacturers to build features that connect with Alexa, such as voice, climate, turn-by-turn navigation and phone call controls, for use in vehicles and devices.
Already, Amazon's Alexa team has worked with Ford, Toyota, BMW, Lexus for integration, as well as Logitech, Anker, and others to help integrate the service into older vehicles as an add-on service.
Some successful integrations include Ford with built-in Sync 3 infotainment integration, Toyota's new Entune 3.0 infotainment system, Garmin's Garmin Speak, and Anker's Alexa-compatible USB car charger.
The media giant's latest move also levels the playing field in the increasingly competitive in-vehicle connectivity segment, lead by Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto's Google Assistant.
At launch time, look for Alexa to provide support for three streaming media services - iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, and Amazon Audible's audio book service.
