So... Apparently, There's an Escaped Pet Ape on the Loose in Southern California

There's some kind of ape on the loose near Los Angeles.

File this under news that doesn't pop up every day. A hiker in La Crescenta, California caught something very out of place on camera during a walk down some nature trails last week. It appears to be some kind of unidentified ape.

"Something was in the trees going from tree to tree, so I figured it was a bird or something," Jacob Gardiner told CBS Los Angeles.

You can see the fleeting video footage and hear more about this strange sighting in their report below.

California Fish and Wildlife believes the sighting is an escaped pet. "We've had this before where we get exotic pets and people can't take care of them," Fish and Wildlife employee Andrew Hughan told the station. "They either let them go or escape."

Gardiner has kept going back to try and capture some better footage, but the ape has so far eluded him. In any case, the sighting seems strangely appropriate with a new Planet of the Apes film slated to open next month.

Others, meanwhile, like the cast members of Animal Planet's popular "Finding Bigfoot" reality TV show, have offered up their own explanations of the footage on social media. Make of this what you will.

Whatever the case may be, we'll keep an eye on this strange story to see if any more sightings of the ape come up or if the animal is captured.
