It's the 25th Anniversary of the Classic Talking Pig Movie.
The 1995 kids' movie Babe is a story about hope, ambition, and more than anything, the attitude that you can be anything you want to be no matter what people (or in this case, barnyard animals) say. It's also responsible for coining the iconic phrase: "that'll do pig, that'll do."
This box office hit is a heartwarming tale centered around a young piglet named Babe (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) that was won by a farmer named Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) at a county fair and bought home to the Hoggett's farm. There, the talking pig meets Fly, a motherly border collie (voiced by Miriam Margolyes), who quickly takes the piglet under her, um, paws? "Mom" raises Babe as one of her own, and as a piglet raised by sheepdogs, the young piglet soon discovers that he also has a knack for herding sheep. And with the help of farmer Hoggett and the farmer's wife, Esme (Magda Szubanski), Babe takes part in a sheepherding competition. However, to become the greatest sheep-pig of all time, Babe will have to overcome prejudices at the Hoggett's farm when he wasn't quite accepted by all the farm animals.
Based on the novel, The Sheep-Pig, by Dick King-Smith, Babe Director Chris Noonan expresses the Hollywood story beautifully, and quite honestly, the final scene of the movie with talking animals still makes us cry.
Babe Turns 25: "That'll Do Pig, That'll Do."
This year, the Oscar-winning talking pig movie turns 25 (talk about feeling old!) and dear ole' Babe is coming back to the big screen - yes, to celebrate this milestone, the Babe movie will grace our movie screens once again in limited theater re-releases. This 25th anniversary event is brought to you by TCM Big Screen Classics, and will include exclusive insights from Turner Classic Movies. This delightful movie will certainly warm your hearts (again) this holiday season - this is also a great time to introduce any kiddies you know to the magic of Babe.
Inspirational, full of heart, and funny, the tale of the triumphant little piglet is easily one of the best family movies ever made. With the help of a little special effects and some amazing animatronics, the story of Babe went from a relatively small-budget movie to a (multi) million-dollar success - and for a kids' movie about some baby animals, we would say that's pretty good! In 1996, Babe won the Academy Award for "Best Visual Effects" as well as being nominated for several other Oscars.
Babe teaches about tolerance, acceptance, and just as important, if you want something, you've got to work hard and hustle. It is indeed a classic - and re-watching it, especially the final scene, (still) gives us some major feels.
So, this weekend, instead of watching Disney classics like The Lion King for the thousandth time, watch the classic tale of Babe and learn some invaluable life lessons from the talking pig - just remember to bring the tissues.
