Campfire Sour Cocktail Recipe

This Campfire Sour Cocktail recipe is perfect for the autumn season.

It's the fall season, and for a lot of us across the country that means campfire season, too. What could be greater than a night spent outside with a group of friends by the fire? A perfectly appropriate cocktail to go along with it!

Whether you're on a camping adventure or just having a backyard bonfire, this drink has the foundation of a classic cocktail with a twist that makes it one of the more unique drink recipes that's still really easy that you'll come across.

If you're a fan of the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, you'l probably enjoy the Campfire Sour. It mimics a Whiskey Sour recipe, but adds the smoke of a burned rosemary sprig

We'll hand credit over to 1889 Magazine, which shared the recipe they said came courtesy of Bad Dog Distillery outside Seattle, Washington.

You'll need a cocktail shaker, a lemon squeezer, some ice, and something to light the spring of rosemary on fire, preferably the actual bonfire you're sitting next to. Then gather and measure out these ingredients:

  • 3 shots rye whiskey
  • 1 and 1/2 shots fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 shot maple syrup
  • 1 sprig of rosemary (plus 2 extra springs for garnish)

Add the rye whiskey, lemon juice, and maple syrup to the shaker. Light the rosemary sprig on fire, and set it in the shaker, smoking side up. Cap and seal the shaker, without shaking yet, and let it sit for 30 seconds while the mixture has a chance to infuse with the smoke.

Open the shaker and remove the burned rosemary, then add ice and seal again for a 15-second shake. Strain it into a cocktail glass over ice, and garnish with the remaining rosemary sprigs.

You could probably substitute simple syrup for the maple syrup, but there's something about maple syrup that further encourages the wood cabin, wilderness factor and ties the cocktail together just so.
