Sight-fishing steelhead isn't common, but when you can do it, do it.
Most anglers who fish steelhead utilize long drifts through holes and they never really see the take. Instead, they feel the pull of a school bus once a steelhead decides to eat. Other anglers try to get up close and personal on smaller bodies of water, but then still, it's drifting the holes. In this video you're about to see, a couple lucky anglers actually get to try sight fishing steelhead in a very clear stream.
If I walked up on something like this, it would be hard for me to keep my cool. I could almost guarantee my first cast would smack the water so hard, it would all but certainly be over. Oh, or I would get snagged in a tree. There's always that.
I think this is what they talk about when they speak of nerves of steel. Sorry, bad joke.
Regardless, this is one cool video. Steelhead aren't always ready to eat, but sometimes they can be. This just goes to show if you're in right place at the right time, good things can happen.
