Canada Newfie Expertly Trained in Snow Removal and More

What a good helper!

Sunnybrae, Nova Scotia gets a lot of snow and residents there can always use a little extra help shoveling. Dean and Grace Edwards live in Sunnybrae, near Salmon Arm, and instead of hiring help they've trained their six-year-old dog, a Newfoundland, to do the snow removal.

"The snow shovel was no problem to teach, because she knows how to take stuff and hold it in her mouth," Dean told Columbia Valley Pioneer.

"But the snowblower took about a month. She was happy to jump up there and the noise and vibration didn't bother her a bit, but teaching her to walk on her back legs, that's a difficult thing to learn."

The lovable Newfie, officially named Morgan but called Miss Goo because of all that drooling, knows lots of tricks in addition to shoveling and pushing a mechanical snowblower. She can get beer out of the fridge and snacks from the cupboard, always remembering to close the doors afterward. She also helps with other household tasks like the vacuuming, and taking out the trash.

Even though these tasks would all be tempting to most naughty dogs, Miss Goo is well behaved.

"She never goes in there when she's not told," says Grace. "I think she knows if she does it when she's asked, she gets a cookie. If she's not asked to do it, she won't get any reward, so it's not worth her time. She knows it's food she's getting out of the fridge, but I don't think she's ever realized that she could just eat it herself."

The 126-pound dog is a registered St. John's Therapy Dog and she holds numerous impressive titles in water rescue, obedience, rally obedience and draft dog, which is a competition where the dog, usually a Newfoundland or Bernese Mountain dog, pulls a cart around obstacles.

Newfoundland dogs are known for their docile temperaments and calm demeanors. Even though they can get up to 150 pounds, they are really gentle giants and can do amazing things when trained well!
