The new Shimano Metanium is here, and it looks awesome.
Avid fishermen know the Shimano name well. The Japanese fishing tackle manufacturer is a favorite of professional tournament bass anglers everywhere for their fishing reels full of high-end features and reliability.
So, we're not surprised to see there's a ton of excitement over the new Shimano Metanium baitcasting reel here in the United States.

Shimano says on their website that the new Metanium mgl reels were redesigned from the ground up for 2020. These baitcasters feature an MGL spool designed to reduce inertia significantly. It should help increase casting distance too. The new micromodule gearing is now brass and features more teeth. Speaking of gears, Shimano is incorporating their popular x-ship technology into these reels. They use larger pinion gears to increase power to the handle. The max drag of these reels is 11 pounds. They feature an S-ARB ball bearing system with 10+1 bearings for a smooth feel.
There's some new Shimano technology on this reel in the new SVS infinity braking system. The company says this infinitely adjustable. That means the brake system should provide a bit more versatility to cover a wide range of presentations without having to completely change setups based on lure size. Should be useful for bass fishing enthusiasts who need to change lures in a hurry from a heavy jig to a light crankbait. The line capacity is 12/110 according to online specs.
For construction, Shimano went with a lightweight, low profile Hagane body and for the magnumlite spool, light aluminum. The whole thing weighs just 6.2 ounces. The Shimano Metanium MGL is available in a variety of gear ratios and in left or right-handed retrieve models. Based on all the positive online reviews we're already seeing, we're guessing these reels are going to be a hit this year with pros and amateur anglers alike.
