Thanks to Chevrolet's new in-dash feature, paying for gas just got a little easier.
Gone are the days of swiping a card at the pump—Chevrolet and Shell have teamed up to create the first-ever in-car payment system.
There's not much that infotainment systems can't do. From guiding you to your next destination to calling a family member, it was only a matter of time a feature like this was created.
But how does it work?
It starts with Marketplace, the first commerce platform in the industry that is also a part of Chevy's MyLink.
"We introduced Marketplace to deliver value, productivity and convenience to our customers," said Rick Ruskin, senior manager, Online Commerce, Chevrolet.
Marketplace is accessible through the center touchscreen display. Simply tap on the Shell icon, and from there, you'll be directed to choose your designated location and pump. You're then pretty much all set to start fueling.
A perk of this technology is the ingrained Fuel Rewards Program, which helps customers save on their fill-up.
"Bringing the Shell Pay & Save functionality right on the touchscreen of our vehicles is the latest advancement of this platform, allowing drivers to simply access Fuel Rewards® and pay for gas while inside their car," Ruskin comments.
Shell is equally excited about this innovation. Sydney Kimball, the VP of Fuel Sales and Marketing Americas for Shell Oil Products U.S., comments, "At Shell we are constantly working to develop better products and services for our customers, and we are always evolving according to their transforming needs and expectations around convenience, quality, digitalization and service. We're thrilled to be working with Chevrolet to make this a reality."
Marketplace is eligible in 2017 and beyond Chevy vehicles. As of yet, it's exclusive to Chevrolet models, but we're anticipating similar technologies to roll out from other manufacturers if this proves successful.
The in-dash payment is currently operating at select Shell stations in Detroit, Seattle and Houston, but it will be made available throughout the U.S. in the coming months.
